Christmas Day
A Christian holiday held annually on December 25th, Christmas celebrates
the birth of Christ. The origin of the festival is unknown, but it is believed
to be derived from early celebrations of the winter solstice. The usage
of holly, mistletoe, and Yule logs in celebration, can be traced back to
pagan customs.
The
Christmas Tree
An evergreen tree decorated with lights and ornaments. It is derived from
the paradise tree from German mystery plays, symbolizes Eden. The Christmas
tree custom was first used in France in the 17th century and spread through
out Europe. Prince Albert introduced the Christmas tree to Great Britain
in 1841. Immigrants to the United States brought the custom with them.
Santa
Claus
Dutch settlers celebrated St. Nicholas' Day on December 6. On St. Nicholas'
Eve, gifts were given to the children, as St. Nicholas is the patron saint
of children. Santa Claus is derived from the Dutch "Sinterklass", a modification
of Sint Nikolaas.
